Dry Needling

Dry needling is a method used to inactivate a myofascial trigger point within a muscle.  A solid needle, such as an acupuncture needle, is used in this treatment.  A myofascial trigger point is a tight contracted region within a muscle that is quite painful when palpated and can cause local tenderness as well as refer pain to other regions of the body.  The needle is inserted into the trigger point which causes a 'twitch response' which is the process of inactivating the trigger point.  An immediate release of the muscle tightness is noted with a noticeable improvement in the associated range of motion.  The area treated may be uncomfortable for one to two days after the treatment.  Dry needling is almost always accompanied by other therapeutic techniques.

It is very important to note that this treatment should not be confused with a complete acupuncture treatment.
